Haiti’s magnitude 7.0 earthquake happened five years ago, on Jan. 12, 2010. This graphic by Ramon Martinez offers a reminder of just how destructive the earthquake was. Using data from the Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation, the graphic tracks life expectancy in Haiti from 1990 to 2013.
During the year of the earthquake, all of these totals drop dramatically, a reflection of the roughly 220,000 people that died during the disaster.
